What a disavow file does
A disavow file tells Google to ignore specific backlinks when assessing your site. Domain vs URL entries
Disavowing a whole domain with the <code>domain:</code> prefix ignores every link from that site, which is usually what you want because spam networks create many pages. Google recommends disavowing at the domain level in most cases. Disavowing an exact URL only ignores that single page, which is useful when a mostly-good site has one bad link to you. This tool supports both and removes duplicates automatically.
Correct formatting matters
Google expects a plain-text file, one entry per line, using <code>domain:example.com</code> for domains or a full URL for pages, with optional comment lines starting with <code>#</code>. This generator handles the formatting for you: it strips <code>http://</code>, <code>https://</code>, and <code>www.</code> for domain entries, lowercases hosts, skips anything that is not a valid domain or URL, and can add a dated comment so you remember when the file was made.
