The Significance of Thai Pongal
**Pongal** is a four-day harvest festival celebrated by the Tamil community, particularly in Tamil Nadu, India, and among the Tamil diaspora worldwide. It is observed to thank the Sun God (Surya) for the agricultural abundance. It typically falls in mid-January, coinciding with the start of the Tamil month, Thai.
The Four Days of Pongal:
- **Bhogi Pongal:** The first day, dedicated to discarding old belongings and celebrating new beginnings.
- **Thai Pongal:** The second and most important day, where the ceremonial **"Pongal"** dish (sweet rice boiled in milk) is cooked outdoors as an offering to the Sun God.
- **Maattu Pongal:** The third day, dedicated to cattle, which help in farming.
- **Kaanum Pongal:** The fourth day, dedicated to visiting family and friends.
