Fuel Cost and Trip Calculator
Estimate the fuel volume and total cost for your road trip, including the return journey and cost sharing among passengers.
1. Trip and Vehicle Metrics
Litres used per 100 kilometers driven.
2. Costs and Sharing
Used for cost sharing.
How the Fuel Cost Calculator Works
This tool uses three key inputs—distance, fuel efficiency, and price—to calculate the total fuel volume needed and the associated monetary cost. The calculation is based on the following straightforward steps:
Core Calculation Steps
- **Total Distance:** Determine the total kilometers to be traveled (one-way or round trip). $$ \text{Total Distance} = \text{One-Way Distance} \times (\text{Return Trip} ? 2 : 1) $$
- **Fuel Volume Required (Liters):** Calculate the total fuel needed based on efficiency (L/100km). $$ \text{Fuel Volume} = \frac{\text{Total Distance}}{\text{100}} \times \text{Efficiency}_\text{L/100km} $$
- **Total Fuel Cost:** Multiply the required fuel volume by the price per litre. $$ \text{Total Cost} = \text{Fuel Volume} \times \text{Price per Litre} $$
- **Cost Per Person:** Divide the total cost by the number of passengers sharing the expense.
Important Considerations for Road Trips
- **Actual vs. Rated Efficiency:** Vehicle efficiency (L/100km) can be worse than the manufacturer's rating due to traffic, hills, heavy luggage, and high speeds. Factor in an extra 10-15% buffer.
- **Tolls and Other Costs:** This calculation covers only fuel. Don't forget to factor in tolls, parking fees, and potential road taxes.
