The 12 Months of the Gregorian Calendar

The Gregorian calendar, used worldwide, organizes the year into 12 months. The length of these months varies between 30 and 31 days, with February being the exception at 28 or 29 days (during a leap year).

Mnemonic for Days in a Month:

A common way to remember the lengths is the "knuckle" method: Make a fist. Starting with your index finger knuckle as January (31 days), every knuckle is 31 days, and every dip between knuckles is 30 days (or 28/29 for February). The sequence: January (knuckle), February (dip), March (knuckle), April (dip), May (knuckle), June (dip), July (knuckle). Then restart on the next knuckle for August.

Leap Year Rule:

A **leap year** occurs every four years when February has 29 days. A year is a leap year if it is divisible by 4, except for years divisible by 100 but not by 400. The primary purpose of a leap year is to keep the calendar year synchronized with the astronomical year.
