The Major Festivals of the Kalash People
The Kalash people, residing in three remote valleys (Bumburet, Birir, and Rumbur) of Chitral, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, are known for their unique culture and vibrant polytheistic traditions. Their calendar is marked by three major seasonal festivals that blend ancient rituals, music, dance, and communal feasts.
The Three Main Festivals:
- **Chilam Joshi (Joshi):** Celebrated in mid-May, marking the arrival of spring, the blooming of flowers, and the movement of flocks to higher pastures.
- **Uchal (Utchal):** Celebrated in mid-August, giving thanks for the summer harvest, especially the wheat and grapes. Milk and cheese are key parts of the offering.
- **Choimus (Chawmos):** Celebrated in mid-December, the longest and most important festival, marking the end of the year and the return of the sun. It includes rituals for purification, feasting, and predictions for the coming year.
