Understanding Zakat and Nisab

**Zakat** (often translated as alms-giving) is the third Pillar of Islam. It is a mandatory charitable contribution based on a Muslim's wealth, paid annually. The standard rate is **2.5%** of one's net stable wealth that has been held for one lunar year (a period known as the **Hawl**).

What is Nisab?

**Nisab** is the minimum threshold of wealth a Muslim must possess before they become obligated to pay Zakat. The Nisab is traditionally calculated based on the market value of either:

  • **87.48 grams of pure gold**
  • **612.36 grams of pure silver**
In modern practice, many scholars recommend using the **lower of the two values** (which is usually the silver Nisab) to maximize the amount of charity distributed. Our calculator uses this principle to determine your obligation status.
