Understanding Zakat and Nisab
**Zakat** (often translated as alms-giving) is the third Pillar of Islam. It is a mandatory charitable contribution based on a Muslim's wealth, paid annually. The standard rate is **2.5%** of one's net stable wealth that has been held for one lunar year (a period known as the **Hawl**).
What is Nisab?
**Nisab** is the minimum threshold of wealth a Muslim must possess before they become obligated to pay Zakat. The Nisab is traditionally calculated based on the market value of either:
- **87.48 grams of pure gold**
- **612.36 grams of pure silver**
